What is Step Dimming

Step dimming allows users to adjust the brightness of their lights by selecting from preset intensity levels. This cost-effective solution eliminates the need for additional tools like dimmers or control modules. Step dimming can be easily controlled using existing switches, regardless of their placement on the floor, wall, or ceiling.

To adjust the brightness level using step dimming, users simply need to toggle the switch on and off multiple times within a three-second timeframe. Each time the light is switched on and off, it automatically transitions to the next preset dim level. For instance, an LED light fixture with step dimming capability may offer four preset levels: 100%, 75%, 50%, and 25%. If the light remains switched off for more than three seconds, it will default to 100% brightness for the next use.

Step dimming provides several advantages. Firstly, it is a cost-effective solution as it utilizes existing light switches, eliminating the need for additional equipment. This makes it a convenient and user-friendly option, requiring no complex programming or controls. The preset light levels of step-dimming fixtures are precisely calibrated and do not change over time, ensuring consistent lighting levels whenever the brightness is adjusted. Additionally, step-dimming lights do not require any extra wiring, simplifying the installation process.

In marine lighting applications, step dimming proves particularly useful. It enables precise lighting adjustments for navigation and safety purposes on marine vessels. By adjusting the light level, specific requirements for different tasks, such as navigation or accent lighting, can be easily met.
