What is ETL

ETL is a certification for electrical safety, similar to UL. It is awarded by Electrical Testing Labs, which is operated by Intertek. ETL tests products to ensure they meet the same safety standards as UL. Just like UL, the presence of an ETL mark indicates that a product is safe for public use.

ETL, in the context of electrical, stands for Electrical Testing Labs. It was founded by Thomas Alva Edison in 1896 with the aim of ensuring product performance and safety through rigorous testing.

There is minimal distinction between UL and ETL marks. It is crucial to understand that both are endorsed by the OSHA-certified, Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories (NRTL). When conducting research on new test chambers, it is important to select a manufacturer whose products are certified to meet either UL or ETL standards.

The ETL Mark serves as evidence that a product complies with safety standards in North America. It is widely accepted by Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and code officials in the US and Canada as proof of compliance with industry standards.

The safety level of ETL and UL labels is very similar. In fact, ETL certification adheres to the same safety standards as Underwriter Laboratories or UL. Whether a product is UL listed or ETL listed, you can have confidence that it meets rigorous safety requirements.

ETL is acknowledged as an NRTL in the United States and also holds recognition as a Testing Organization and Certifying Body in Canada by the Standards Council of Canada. The ETL Listed Mark is awarded to products that have successfully met the necessary criteria of established safety standards.
