What is DRL Light

A DRL light, also known as Daytime Running Light, is an automotive lighting feature designed to enhance the visibility of a vehicle during daylight hours. DRL lights are typically located at the front of the vehicle and are bright enough to be seen clearly in daylight conditions, but not so bright as to cause dazzle. These lights automatically turn on when the engine is started and turn off when the headlights are switched on. DRL lights are regulated by UN ECE Regulation 87, which defines the performance requirements for these lights. Additionally, UN ECE Regulation 48 defines the operating requirements for DRL lights. These regulations ensure that DRL lights meet certain standards and specifications.

Since 2011, DRL lights have been fitted to most new cars and vans in compliance with European regulations. However, retrofitting DRL lights is not mandatory, but kits are available for those who wish to install them. When installing DRL lights, they should be set to turn on with the engine and turn off when the headlights are switched on.

The benefits of DRL lights include their potential to reduce road deaths and serious injuries, as suggested by research conducted by the European Commission. However, there have been concerns about the constant glare of headlights and the potential decrease in visibility for motorcycle riders.
