Wat is digitale multiplex (DMX)
DMX, kort voor Digital Multiplex, is een protocol voor verlichtingsregeling op grote schaal gebruikt in de verlichtingsindustrie. Het is een communicatiesysteem waarmee individuele of groepen lampen centraal kunnen worden bestuurd via een of meer kanalen. De DMX-opstelling bestaat uit een serieschakeling, waarbij een controller gegevens verstuurt die door alle aangesloten verlichtingsarmaturen gaan.

DMX biedt nauwkeurige controle over verschillende verlichtingsfuncties. DMX-kanalen instrueren verlichtingsarmaturen om specifieke acties uit te voeren. Bijvoorbeeld, elke kleur van een RGB-licht heeft één DMX-kanaal nodig, terwijl een RGBW-lamp vier kanalen nodig heeft. Dit betekent dat een DMX Universe, die tot 512 kanalen kan aansturen, 128 RGBW-armaturen volledig kan aansturen.
Voor een goede werking van het DMX-systeem wordt een terminator gebruikt aan het einde van de serieschakeling. De terminator voorkomt signaalvervorming door te voorkomen dat het signaal wordt teruggekaatst. Hij speelt een essentiële rol in het behoud van de integriteit van het DMX-signaal.
