램프의 전원이 켜지면 고전압이 가해져 램프가 시작되고 빛을 발산합니다. 전구에 존재하는 네온 가스는 가열되면서 분홍색에서 주황색으로 변합니다. 바이메탈 스트립과 커패시터로 구성된 점화기가 높은 시작 전압을 제공합니다. 바이메탈 스트립이 가열로 인해 팽창하면 단락되어 램프가 켜집니다. 반대로 스트립이 냉각되면 연결이 끊어지고 램프가 꺼집니다.
수은증기 램프는 와트당 35~65루멘의 에너지 효율과 24,000시간의 긴 정격 수명을 비롯한 여러 가지 장점을 제공합니다. 고강도 백색광을 제공하며 다양한 색상, 모양, 크기 및 등급으로 제공됩니다. 하지만 고려해야 할 몇 가지 단점이 있습니다. 이러한 램프의 단점은 다음과 같습니다. 루멘 유지 관리 불량완전히 예열하는 데 5~7분, 식히는 데 5~6분이 소요됩니다. 또한 전압 변동에 민감합니다.
