水銀灯とは
水銀ランプはガス放電ランプの一種で、気化した水銀に電流を流すことで発光する。ランプは、水銀蒸気とアルゴンガスを含む媒体中に置かれた、タングステン合金製の2つの電極で構成されている。このセットアップは、シリカでできた楕円形のガラス管に収められている。

ランプに電源を入れると、高電圧が印加されてランプが始動し、発光する。電球に含まれるネオンガスは、加熱するとピンク色からオレンジ色に変化する。バイメタル・ストリップとコンデンサーから成るイグナイターが、高い始動電圧を供給する。バイメタル・ストリップが加熱により膨張すると短絡し、ランプが点灯する。逆に、ストリップが冷えると接続が切れ、ランプが消灯する。
水銀灯は、ワットあたり35～65ルーメンのエネルギー効率、24,000時間の長寿命など、いくつかの利点を備えています。高輝度の白色光を提供し、様々な色、形、サイズ、定格があります。しかし、考慮すべき欠点もある。これらのランプには ルーメン維持不良ウォームアップに5～7分、クールダウンに5～6分かかる。さらに、電圧の変動にも敏感である。
