円錐と桿体とは
錐体と桿体は、人間の目の網膜にある2種類の特殊な細胞を指す。視細胞として知られるこれらの細胞は、以下の機能を担っている。 光を電気信号に変換する 脳が解釈できる
錐体は主に色覚を司り、窩と呼ばれる網膜の中心部に集中している。錐体には3つのタイプがあり、それぞれ赤、緑、青の異なる波長の光に感応する。この3種類の錐体からの信号を組み合わせることで、私たちの脳はさまざまな色を認識することができる。錐体は明るい場所で最も効果を発揮し、高い視力を発揮するため、細かい部分まで見ることができる。

一方、竿は以下のことに敏感である。 低照度 薄暗い場所や夜間の視力を司る。桿体(かんたい)は網膜全体に存在するが、窩(か)には存在しない。桿体（かんたい）は色覚には関与しないが、動きの検出や周辺視に重要な役割を果たす。桿体は光に対して非常に敏感ですが、錐体と比べると視力は低くなります。
