DMX 可精确控制各种照明功能。DMX 通道指示灯具执行特定操作。例如，每种颜色的 RGB燈 需要一个 DMX 通道，而一个 RGBW 灯具需要四个通道。这意味着，一个可以控制多达 512 个通道的 DMX Universe 可以完全控制 128 个 RGBW 灯具。
