在典型的设置中，电路两端有两个 3 向开关，中间有一个或多个 4 向开关。当其中一个三向开关被打开时，它就会通过其中一根走线向四向开关发送信号。然后，4 向开关会将电力输送到另一个 3 向开关或 灯具.同样，当另一个 3 向开关被打开时，它通过另一根导线向 4 向开关发送信号，然后 4 向开关将电流转向相反的方向。
