In tegenstelling tot transparante materialen die helder zicht mogelijk maken, verstrooien en diffunderen doorschijnende materialen het licht. Deze verstrooiing van licht resulteert in wazige en verzachte beelden van objecten die door het materiaal heen worden gezien.
