Hij bestaat uit een lange, smalle glazen buis die aan de binnenkant is bekleed met fosfor. In de buis bevindt zich een kleine hoeveelheid kwikdamp en een inert gas, zoals argon of krypton. <\/p><p>Wanneer er een elektrische stroom op de buis wordt gezet, worden de kwikatomen geprikkeld, waardoor ze ultraviolet (UV) licht uitstralen. Dit UV-licht interageert vervolgens met de fosforcoating, waardoor deze fluoresceert en zichtbaar licht uitzendt.
