Het is een verschijnsel dat optreedt wanneer een voorwerp, zoals de wolfraamdraad in een gloeilamp, tot een hoge temperatuur wordt verhit, waardoor het zichtbaar licht gaat uitstralen. Dit proces wordt vaak gebruikt in gloeilampen, waar een elektrische stroom door de gloeidraad loopt, deze opwarmt en laat gloeien. In het geval van gloeilampen is de gloeidraad meestal gemaakt van wolfraam, dat een hoog smeltpunt heeft en bestand is tegen de hoge temperaturen die nodig zijn voor gloeien. Wanneer de elektrische stroom door de gloeidraad loopt, warmt deze op en straalt licht uit.<\/p><p>Gloeilampen produceren niet alleen licht, maar ook een aanzienlijke hoeveelheid warmte. Ongeveer 90 procent van de energie die door gloeilampen wordt verbruikt, wordt omgezet in warmte, terwijl slechts ongeveer 10 procent wordt omgezet in zichtbaar licht.
