Wat is kaars<\/h2>

In de verlichtingsindustrie verwijst een kaars naar een lichtbron die voornamelijk wordt gebruikt voor decoratieve en ceremoni\u00eble doeleinden. Ze worden meestal gemaakt van materialen zoals was of talg, die langzaam branden. Kaarsen worden meestal gevonden in cilindrische vormen, hoewel ze ook kunnen worden gemaakt in verschillende ingewikkelde ontwerpen. De kern van een kaars is een vezelige lont die wordt omhuld en verzadigd door de was of andere materialen.<\/p>

Kaarsen hebben een lange geschiedenis, die teruggaat tot de oude beschavingen. Archeologisch bewijs, zoals kandelaars uit Egypte en Kreta die dateren uit 3000 voor Christus, laat hun vroege gebruik zien. Tijdens de Europese Middeleeuwen wonnen vetkaarsen, gemaakt van dierlijk vet, aan populariteit. Het belang van kaarsen in deze periode blijkt uit een belastinglijst in Parijs in 1292, waarin 71 chandlers, of kaarsenmakers, worden genoemd.<\/p>

Vooruitgang in de productie van kaarsen vond plaats in de 19e eeuw. Een Franse scheikundige genaamd Michel-Eug\u00e8ne Chevreul ontdekte stearinezuur door het vetzuur te scheiden van de glycerine van vet. Deze doorbraak leidde tot de creatie van superieure kaarsen. Er werden ook andere bronnen van kaarsstof ontdekt, waaronder spermaceti uit de kopholte van de potvis en paraffine uit aardolie. Een combinatie van paraffine en stearinezuur werd de basiskaarsgrondstof.<\/p>

Bij het gebruik van een kaars zorgt de hitte van de vlam ervoor dat de was aan de basis van de lont vloeibaar wordt. Door capillaire werking stroomt de vloeibare was omhoog en wordt verdampt door de hitte van de vlam. De vlam zelf is het resultaat van de verbranding van de wasdamp.<\/p>

In de 19e eeuw werden machines voor het gieten van kaarsen ontwikkeld, wat een revolutie betekende in het productieproces. Deze machines bestaan uit rijen mallen in een verwarmde en gekoelde metalen tank. Nadat de mallen zijn afgekoeld, worden de kaarsen uitgeworpen met behulp van zuigers, waarbij spoelen met lonten door de zuigers worden geleid om door de kaarsenmal te gaan. Terwijl de afgekoelde kaarsen worden uitgeworpen, worden de lonten doorgesneden.<\/p>

De term \"Kaars\" verwijst ook naar de Standaard of Internationale Kaars, die historisch werd gebruikt als meeteenheid voor de intensiteit van lichtbronnen. Oorspronkelijk werd deze gedefinieerd als een kaars van een zesde pond gemaakt van spermawas, brandend met een snelheid van 120 korrels per uur. Deze meting werd echter in 1921 gestandaardiseerd in termen van gloeilampen, waardoor kaarsen verouderd raakten als referentie voor lichtintensiteit.<\/p>

In de moderne tijd worden kaarsen gemaakt in een grote verscheidenheid aan kleuren, vormen en maten. Ze kunnen ook toevoegingen bevatten zoals bijenwas of laurierwas, en ze kunnen geparfumeerd zijn.
