Esistono due tipi di adattamento: l'adattamento al buio e l'adattamento alla luce. L'adattamento al buio \u00e8 il processo con cui l'occhio si adatta ai bassi livelli di luce e comporta la rigenerazione del pigmento visivo dall'opsina e dall'11-cis retina. Il tempo necessario per l'adattamento al buio e la rigenerazione del pigmento \u00e8 in gran parte determinato dalla concentrazione locale di retinale 11-cis e dalla velocit\u00e0 con cui viene fornito all'opsina nei bastoncelli sbiancati. I bastoncelli sono pi\u00f9 sensibili alla luce e impiegano pi\u00f9 tempo per adattarsi completamente al cambiamento di luce. I coni, invece, impiegano circa 9-10 minuti per adattarsi al buio. La sensibilit\u00e0 della via dei bastoncelli migliora notevolmente entro 5-10 minuti al buio. L'inibizione dei neuroni influisce anche sull'attivazione delle sinapsi. Durante questo periodo di adattamento, la sensibilit\u00e0 della retina diminuisce e i coni dell'occhio diventano pi\u00f9 attivi dei bastoncelli. Il processo di adattamento pu\u00f2 essere misurato clinicamente utilizzando esperimenti di soglia di incremento, che possono fornire una misura chiara e oggettiva della funzione retinica. La curva di soglia rispetto all'intensit\u00e0 ottenuta da tali esperimenti pu\u00f2 avere una forma monofasica o bifasica a seconda della scelta della lunghezza d'onda del test e dello sfondo, della dimensione del test e dell'eccentricit\u00e0 retinica. La risposta bifasica riflette la natura duplex della visione, con un ramo inferiore appartenente al sistema dei bastoncelli e un ramo superiore appartenente al sistema dei coni. Il principio della legge di Weber pu\u00f2 essere applicato alla costanza del contrasto o all'invarianza del contrasto, dove il contrasto rimane costante e indipendente dalla luminanza ambientale.
