Ini adalah ukuran cahaya yang jatuh pada permukaan tertentu, seperti dinding atau meja. Iluminasi bergantung pada area permukaan tempat cahaya jatuh, bukan pada kapasitas sumber cahaya itu sendiri. Nilai iluminasi dipengaruhi oleh jarak antara sumber cahaya dan area permukaan. Apabila area permukaan lebih dekat ke sumber cahaya, maka nilai iluminasi akan lebih tinggi. Sebaliknya, apabila area permukaan semakin menjauh dari sumber cahaya, maka nilai iluminasi akan menurun. Hubungan ini memungkinkan iluminasi memberikan indikasi perkiraan intensitas sumber cahaya apabila membandingkan iluminasi dua cahaya pada area permukaan yang sama dari jarak yang sama. Iluminasi tidak secara langsung mengukur kapasitas sumber cahaya untuk menghasilkan cahaya. Sebaliknya, iluminasi mengukur jumlah cahaya yang mencapai permukaan tertentu.
