Lampu ini dirancang sebagai alternatif yang lebih ramah lingkungan daripada lampu pijar tradisional. CFL dikenal karena ukurannya yang ringkas, efisiensi energi, dan masa pakainya yang panjang. CFL beroperasi dengan mengalirkan arus listrik melalui tabung yang mengandung sedikit uap merkuri dan lapisan fosfor. Ketika arus mengalir melalui tabung, arus akan menggairahkan uap merkuri, sehingga memancarkan sinar ultraviolet (UV). Lapisan fosfor di bagian dalam tabung kemudian mengubah sinar UV menjadi cahaya tampak, sehingga menghasilkan penerangan yang disediakan oleh CFL.<\/p><div
