Consiste en un tubo de vidrio largo y estrecho recubierto interiormente de f\u00f3sforo. Dentro del tubo hay una peque\u00f1a cantidad de vapor de mercurio y un gas inerte, como arg\u00f3n o cript\u00f3n. <\/p><p>Cuando se aplica corriente el\u00e9ctrica al tubo, los \u00e1tomos de mercurio se excitan y emiten luz ultravioleta (UV). El balasto es un dispositivo que regula el flujo de electricidad al tubo. Hay dos tipos de balastos que se utilizan habitualmente para los tubos fluorescentes: los balastos electr\u00f3nicos y los balastos magn\u00e9ticos.
