Los f\u00f3sforos se componen normalmente de una sustancia hu\u00e9sped, que suele ser un material diel\u00e9ctrico o semiconductor con una gran brecha de banda, y una sustancia activadora, que se a\u00f1ade en una concentraci\u00f3n espec\u00edfica. La sustancia activadora suele ser un ion de tierras raras o de metales de transici\u00f3n, como Eu2+, Eu3+, Mn2+, Cu^+, Pb2+, Ag^+, Ce3+ o Tb3+. Estos iones se incorporan a la sustancia hu\u00e9sped para crear las propiedades luminiscentes deseadas.<\/p>

La concentraci\u00f3n de dopaje de la sustancia activadora se optimiza cuidadosamente para lograr un equilibrio entre una excitaci\u00f3n eficaz del f\u00f3sforo y una reabsorci\u00f3n m\u00ednima de la luz radiada. El objetivo es obtener una longitud de absorci\u00f3n suficientemente peque\u00f1a para la luz de excitaci\u00f3n, evitando al mismo tiempo un apagado excesivo por procesos de transferencia de energ\u00eda.<\/p>

Los f\u00f3sforos se suministran a menudo en forma de polvos finos con part\u00edculas de tama\u00f1o controlado. Estos polvos pueden aplicarse como capas finas para permitir que la mayor parte de la luz luminiscente escape y sea utilizada.
