Det er et grundl\u00e6ggende koncept i forst\u00e5elsen af lysets opf\u00f8rsel og er afg\u00f8rende i forskellige aspekter af lysdesign og teknologi. I belysningsindustrien beskrives lys ofte som udbredelse gennem frit rum i form af tv\u00e6rb\u00f8lger. Disse b\u00f8lger best\u00e5r af oscillerende fotoner, og b\u00f8lgens bev\u00e6gelsesretning er vinkelret p\u00e5 fotonernes svingningsretning.
