Den bruges til at kvantificere m\u00e6ngden af energi, der frigives eller overf\u00f8res over en periode. I belysningsindustrien er joule s\u00e6rligt relevante, n\u00e5r man bestemmer joule-klassificeringen af oversp\u00e6ndingsbeskyttere.<\/p><p>Joule-v\u00e6rdien for en oversp\u00e6ndingsbeskytter angiver dens evne til at absorbere og sprede energi, f\u00f8r den svigter. En h\u00f8jere joule-v\u00e6rdi angiver en st\u00f8rre kapacitet til oversp\u00e6ndingsbeskyttelse. For eksempel frigiver et gennemsnitligt lynnedslag omkring en milliard joule energi over en br\u00f8kdel af et sekund.
