Jednotka angstr\u00f6m je definov\u00e1na jako 0,1 nanometru, co\u017e bylo stanoveno po redefinici metru ve spektroskopick\u00e9m smyslu. Krom\u011b standardn\u00ed jednotky Angstr\u00f6m existovala tak\u00e9 kr\u00e1tce zva\u017eovan\u00e1 pomocn\u00e1 jednotka zvan\u00e1 angstr\u00f6mov\u00e1 hv\u011bzda (symbol: \u00c5*). Tato jednotka, navr\u017een\u00e1 J. A. Beardenem v roce 1965, m\u011bla za c\u00edl m\u00edt podobnou velikost jako standardn\u00ed Angstr\u00f6m, ale definovan\u00e1 p\u0159\u00edmo z hlediska spektroskopie. Angstromova hv\u011bzda se v\u0161ak uk\u00e1zala jako nep\u0159esn\u00e1 a zastaral\u00e1 v d\u016fsledku pokroku v m\u011b\u0159ic\u00edch za\u0159\u00edzen\u00edch. Zjistilo se, \u017ee jej\u00ed p\u0159esnost se bl\u00ed\u017e\u00ed 15 \u010d\u00e1stic\u00edm na milion, co\u017e neodpov\u00edd\u00e1 po\u017eadavk\u016fm sv\u011bteln\u00e9ho pr\u016fmyslu.
